Goodfellas charts the rise and fall of Italian-American gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and his associates James ‘Jimmy the Gent’ Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). Spanning the years from 1955 to 1980, Goodfellas is adapted from the non-fiction book ‘Wiseguy’ by Nicholas Pileggi, a New York crime reporter, who later went on to work with Martin Scorsese again on the screenplay for Casino (1995) and then with Ridley Scott on American Gangster (2007) as Executive Producer.
Fans of The Sopranos, take note: this is the film that inspired David Chase to make his series. Consistently ranking high in Top 100 Films of All Time lists, and named by Roger Ebert as the “best mob movie ever”, GoodFellas remains as entertaining now as it was upon its release. Scorsese references Truffaut’s Jules and Jim (1962) as a huge influence for filmmaking style, particularly for its extensive narration, quick edits, freeze frames and multiple locale switches. Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito is a dynamo, and deservedly won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in this film. Fun fact: his dialogue in the “Do I amuse you?” scene was almost entirely ad-libbed.
