Overview

We’re honoured to present the Australian premiere of the new 4K restoration of Gandahar, the final feature-length science fiction adventure from René Laloux (Fantastic Planet, The Time Masters). With the peaceful people of Gandahar under attack from a mysterious legion of metal men, the leaders at the Council of Women order their warrior Sylvain to investigate. Making strange and beautiful companions along the way, he soon finds the fate of the world resting on his shoulders.

On Thursday 15 January only, Gandahar will be introduced by Angus Truskett as part of Test Pattern.

Why See This Film

If Fantastic Planet and The Time Masters and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind already took your fancy, then Gandahar is for you. René Laloux once more brings the pulp science fiction you’d find in an old comic to life with a refreshing philosophical edge, this time adapting a story by Jean-Pierre Andrevon and collaborating with the comic artist Caza. Adorable critters, matriarchal naturalist societies, wise colonies of deformed outcasts, synth-droning evil robots, goopy higher consciousnesses and even a Godzilla monster – Gandahar has it all!

PRESENTED BY TEST PATTERN

Test Pattern is a new film club by Angus Truskett, dedicated to cult, under-appreciated, and subversive movies. Less of a screening, more of an experience - a celebration of the gonzo, the low-brow, and the gloriously unhinged. Think the glow of SBS after 10pm, or paying some guy online to send you a bootleg DVD-R of a long-lost grail. Cinema for people who like things a little different.
