Based on the true story of one of the most renowned female conductors, Divertimento is the orchestra created by 17 year old Algerian Zahia Ziouani (Oulaya Amamra), integrated into the elite world of French classical music. In the mid-90s, Zahia and her cellist twin sister Fettouma (Lina El Arabi) have travelled from the working-class outer suburbs of Paris to attend the prestigious Lycée Racine music school. Isolated from and discriminated against by their privileged classmates, the sisters set out to establish their own orchestra and advocate for making classical music accessible to diverse audiences.
“Full of passion, tenderness and vigour...Amamra gives an emotionally layered, dynamic performance”
“This life story will inspire young people (and beyond) to fight for their dreams”
This anti-Tár is a comforting, feel-good drama to warm your heart on a cold day, anchored by the compelling performances of its leads. Focusing not only on the sisters' struggle to overcome racial, gender and class discrimination, Divertimento delves deeply into the intense rigour and discipline required to excel in the highly competitive world of classical performance, and the rewards found in the sheer joy of music.
