Overview

La nuit américaine or Day for Night is François Truffaut’s ecstatic celebration of movie-making and the ragtag community it fosters. A French film crew works on a clichéd melodrama: Jean-Pierre Aumont is the aging icon, Jean-Pierre Léaud is the young heartthrob, Jacqueline Bisset is the British star on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Valentina Cortese is an Italian actress playing the mother-in-law, and François Truffaut himself is the director. As the cast and crew face their everyday challenges, things further as a tangled mess of romances, affairs and breakups flourishes. C'est du cinéma!

Why You Should See This Film

It’s impossible not to get swept up in Truffaut’s ode to picture-making and set life; every camera set up, crowd of extras, set dressing and boom mic is treated like royalty, complete with brass fanfares and a palpable atmosphere of inspiration and pride. Capturing the invigorating and sometimes tedious energy of set life with honesty and humour, Truffaut lets us hang out with his stellar cast of ridiculous yet earnest characters throughout all their messy loves and devoted craftsmanship. You’ll be eager to pick up a camera yourself by the credits.
