“You're my only. I'm your only.”
Comprised from three sections of one life, Moonlight is the story of Chiron– known as 'Little,' and later as 'Black.' As an elementary school kid in an impoverished suburb of Miami, Chiron (Alex Hibbert) is shy and withdrawn, small and subdued. Brought up by his single, substance-addicted mother, he crosses paths with dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali) who becomes an unlikely father figure. As a teen, Chiron is tormented by highschool bullies as he comes to grips with his mother's issues, and his own sexuality. As an adult, Chiron transforms himself after a move to Atlanta– physically, but not emotionally. His new, macho facade is broken when someone from his past calls out of the blue, and the softly spoken man has to face up to who he truly is.
Moonlight garnered eight Oscar nominations for 2016, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, winning the Best Picture award after a sensational mix-up at the podium. Ten years on, Barry Jenkins' raw, emotional drama remains a landmark as a sensitive mainstream depiction of Black masculinity and queerness and a display of skill in filmmaking triumphing over limited resources. With a budget of only $1.5 million, DOP James Laxton makes Jenkins' vision sing and intimately captures nuanced portrayals from the stellar cast.
