Overview

From visionary science-fiction animator René Laloux (Fantastic Planet, Gandahar) with designs by the legendary Jean “Mœbius” Giraud (The Incal), The Time Masters is a fantastic adventure through the cosmos tinged with existential quandaries. Stranded on the hostile planet of Perdide, young Piel (Frédéric Legros) radios his father’s friend Jaffar (Jean Valmont) for help. Although his hands are tied smuggling an exiled Prince and Princess (Yves-Marie Maurin and Monique Thierry) away from the eyes of the law, Jaffar rushes across space to rescue the boy, running into all manner of strange worlds, dangerous creatures and puzzling phenomena along the way.

On Monday 29 December only, The Time Masters will be introduced by Angus Truskett as part of Test Pattern.

Why See This Film

Looking better than ever in a new restoration, The Time Masters is not only stunningly animated and beautifully illustrated with lush colours and stark imagery, it’s also a darn good piece of pulpy yet thought-provoking science fiction. Based on a story by Stefan Wul, whose work was also adapted for Fantastic Planet, this film is full of daring feats, charming heroes, sly villains, funny critters and frightening monsters; the stuff of a surprisingly great vintage paperback whose cover has come to life with a rockin’ synth soundtrack by Jean-Pierre Bourtayre.

PRESENTED BY TEST PATTERN

Test Pattern is a new film club by Angus Truskett, dedicated to cult, under-appreciated, and subversive movies. Less of a screening, more of an experience - a celebration of the gonzo, the low-brow, and the gloriously unhinged. Think the glow of SBS after 10pm, or paying some guy online to send you a bootleg DVD-R of a long-lost grail. Cinema for people who like things a little different.
