“Can you make a competition out of making porridge?”
Each year the sleepy Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge hosts The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships, drawing local and international competitors to vie for the coveted title of World Porridge Champion. Armed only with the holy trinity of water, salt and oats, a cast of charming contenders – including a Sydney taco chef, a wellness CEO, a young hopeful with grandma’s recipe and two ex-champs – fight ladle and bowl for their chance at glory, building on a legacy that has grown since the prize’s founding in 1994.
“A palate-pleasing celebration of the noble oat”
“Like a hearty bowl of oat-based breakfast goodness, this is a film that will leave you with a lasting glow”
Pleasing crowds and selling out theatres at SFF, MIFF and beyond, The Golden Spurtle is a hearty look at quirky traditions, eccentric characters and a passionate community. With great empathy and good humour, Australian director Constantine Costi taps into his opera background to explore the drama and daring of competitive porridge making with one of our favourite working cinematographers Dimitri Zaunders (Friends and Strangers) who shoots simmering rivalries, striking landscapes and touching portraits with remarkable precision and grace. Whimsical, heartwarming and visually delicious, The Golden Spurtle is the most fun you’ll have with a documentary this year.
