NEW DIRECTOR’S CUT 4K RESTORATION
Remastered and restored, the long unseen director’s cut of Ken Russell’s wild masterpiece The Devils hits the Golden Screen at last. 1634, in the fortified city of Loudon, Catholics and Huguenots live in harmony under the dissolute rule of Father Urbain Grandier (Olvier Reed) who enjoys countless affairs with the women of the city. Meanwhile, hunch-backed Sister Jeanne des Anges (Vanessa Redgrave) is beset by sexual fantasies of the priest which King Louis XIII and his feudal lords, eager to regain control of the anomalous city, hope to use as evidence of witchcraft.

“The restoration of the material is like cleaning the Sistine Chapel with saliva. It is insane, the epic size of the film. I mean, I’ve seen it on the big screen in Telluride at a theater – but I’ve never never seen the movie until I saw this restoration”
Banned and cut to shreds in the years since its release, a complete version of The Devils has been something of a white whale until now; rightly garnering cult notoriety and reverence along the way. Based on the non-fiction novel by Aldous Huxley and the play by John Whiting, Ken Russell’s provocative film treats the true historic injustices of Loudon with appropriate weight and shocking brutality while embellishing the medieval mania with vivid set design, absurd humour and visceral performances that will leave you repulsed, furious and in awe.
