Overview

The debut English language film of Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Decision to Leave), Stoker is a fiendish tale of tension and intrigue in a very weird family. After the sudden death of her father, teenage India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) is left alone with her unstable mother Evelyn (Nicole Kidman)— until her "long lost" uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) suddenly arrives to live with them. As the handsome interloper gradually insinuates himself into their lives the relationship between mother and daughter grows even more strained and India comes to suspect that Uncle Charlie may have an ulterior motive, even as her fascination with him grows.

Why You Should See This Film

Despite the doubles, psychosexual tension and formal mastery this is not so much a Park Chan-wook-Hitchcock pastiche as it is getting right to the very dark heart of what the Master of Suspense had going on beneath the surface. Kidman is deliciously unhinged as the brittle, paranoid matriarch, more than matched by the slow-burning fuse of Wasikowska's sullen rage. Park's restless energy and stunningly inventive visuals may threaten to overwhelm substance with style but what a style it is, offering distracting moments of beauty as misdirection while this sleek, densely plotted thriller unfolds. Audacious and throbbing with malice, Stoker will keep you guessing until its surprisingly satisfying conclusion.
