Overview

A vivid psychedelic cult classic from Hungarian animator Marcell Jankovics (Johnny Corncob), Son of the White Mare tells an epic elemental folktale with some of the most extraordinary visuals ever put to film. Adapted from poetry by László Arany as well as ancient Hunnic, Avaric and Hungarian legends, this dazzling odyssey sees a white mare give birth to three heroes who band together to save three princesses from three evil dragons.

Why See This Film

Lauded by many as one of the greatest animated films ever made, Jankovics’s second feature delves into his deep interest in folktales with vibrant illustrations influenced by traditional Hungarian design moving and transitioning in abstract with ingenious direction and deft fluidity. After decades of relative obscurity and scarcity, we’re excited to share this wonderful experience as a recent 4K restoration.
