Overview

A companion piece to Sion Sono's cult classic Suicide Club, Noriko's Dinner Table transplants the themes of performance, identity and existential terror into a tense family drama. Shy 17-year old Noriko (Kazue Fukiishi) lives with her family in the small city of Toyokawa, dreaming of a more exciting life despite her parents' insistence she follow the path they have chosen. When she vanishes after making "friends" on a mysterious website who encourage her to run away from home, Noriko's family must unravel the mystery of their missing daughter.

Why See This Film

Where Suicide Club's amorphous structure—with no discernible central characters—communicated the alienation of life in contemporary Japan, Noriko's Dinner Table explores the suffocating constraints of strict familial roles and the siren song of Tokyo's great metropolis, beckoning anyone who craves the freedom of anonymity. This sinuous tale of loneliness and the heavy burden of expectation has been beautifully restored by our guest presenter New Wave Video from the original picture and sound negatives.
