The only film we can think of that successfully combines our two favourite holidays — Christmas and Halloween. Jack Skellington the Pumpkin King lives in Halloween Town, a safe haven for ghosts, witches, werewolves, and other assorted ghouls. Each year, Skellington organises the big Halloween party for the town but this time around he’s looking to jazz it up a bit. After stumbling into Christmas Town by accident, he becomes obsessed with its bright colours and good cheer. Needless to say, the beasties of Halloween Town are less than impressed. That's until Jack takes things a step further, as he attempts to take over the role of “Sandy Claws” and deliver terrifying toys to children in place of y’know, nice things. Only sweet ragdoll Sally thinks Jack’s gone too far…
30th anniversary
The film, along with Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice that’s the most ‘Tim Burton’ of all Tim Burton films. Its fantastical black, white and crazy aesthetic, its Danny Elfman songs, its 100% devotion to joyful creepiness. Director Henry Selick worked with a team of over 120 artist to make this fully stop-motion animated treasure — using no less than 227 puppets in total. But is it a Nightmare or a Dream? Whatever. It's a modern classic.
