A deliciously caustic and utterly brilliant exploration of the narcissism and neuroses that creep into romantic relationships, Albert Brooks’ Modern Romance is a romantic comedy masterwork. Neurotic, self-obsessed Robert Cole (Albert Brooks) is a successful film editor who splits up with his on-again-off-again girlfriend Mary (Kathryn Harrold). He then throws himself into his editing work, new fitness regimes and the bleak world of dating, only to desperately try and win Mary back, when he finds he can’t live without her.
In a just world, Modern Romance would stand alongside the likes of When Harry Met Sally and Annie Hall in the pantheon of all-time great romantic comedies. However, while Brooks has received plenty of acclaim for his acting work, his work as a director remains underappreciated. As frank, funny and clever as films get, its small but vocal group of admirers includes Stanley Kubrick, who told Brooks that it was the movie he’d always wanted to make about jealousy.
