Eighteen year old Sophie is off the meet the wizard, but there’s no yellow brick road here. There is a living scarecrow named Turnip Head though, and the wizard’s name is Howl. Howl’s young and mysterious and after a chance encounter, Sophie doesn’t know if she’ll ever see him again. When she attempts it, The Witch of Waste turns her into a ninety-year-old woman, forcing Sophie to masquerade as a cleaning lady inside Howl’s palace… an incredible, moving castle. With the power-hungry forces of warring kingdoms all trying to draft Howl into battle, Sophie must solve the mystery of his true nature.
Dashing ladies' man, whiny baby, giant bird- the wizard Howl is many things, as is his Moving Castle. A loose adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones' novel, this film is a perfect sampler of Miyazaki's greatest hits: pacifism in the face of military might, flying machines, scenes of eye-watering natural beauty, and Weird Little Guys. It's also a gentle meditation on compassion and aging, the ways we care for each other and what makes life worth living (even if we can't be beautiful).
Please note this film will screen in Japanese with English subtitles.
