Overview

The acclaimed follow-up to the anime classic, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence follows Batou, a cybernetically enhanced operative of Public Security Section-9. A few years after the events of Ghost in the Shell, Batou is paired with Togusa, a new partner with very few augmentations. The duo are tasked with investigating a series of deaths involving malfunctioning ‘Gynoids’: doll-like sex androids. Without clear cause for the murders, a terrorist plot is suspected. However, an examination of the Gynoid remains uncovers an illegal ‘ghost’ within — a sentient consciousness. Things take a turn when reality itself seems to warp around our detectives as their digging uncovers a greater, graver plot.

Why See This Film

The only anime film to ever contend for the Palme d’Or, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, (or just Innocence as it’s titled in Japan) is a standalone story rich with scintillating cityscapes, philosophical musings, cyber-sleuthing and robotic carnage. Kenji Kawai’s iconic score coupled with returning director Mamoru Oshii’s stylistically strong mix of hand-drawn cel animation and 3D CGI make this a unique, evocative and essential piece of cyberpunk anime.
