“If you want me out, you'll have to throw me out”
Spanish screen legend Carmen Maura (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) is luminous as a woman rediscovering her alegría de vivir in Calle Málaga. Maria Angeles (Maura) is a septuagenarian living happily alone in Tangier, Morocco, until her routine is turned upside down when her cash-strapped daughter Carla (Marta Etura) arrives from Madrid to sell the apartment in which she has always lived. Determined to stay, Maria will do everything she can to get her home and her belongings back, and reconnect with her community.
“The most joyful film about eviction you’ll see this year”
“Carmen Mura shines”
“A sweet star showcase that belongs unequivocally to the incandescent Maura”
In writing Calle Málaga, Moroccan director Maryam Touzani (The Blue Caftan) drew on the experiences of her grandmother, weaving an inter-generational story about resilience and and joy in later life. Despite the at times emotionally fraught subject matter, Touzani harnesses longtime Pedro Almodóvar collaborator Maura's natural charisma and captures the vibrant spirit of Tangier to craft a beautifully warm and uplifting tale.
