Behold the cosmic masterpiece that will forever be the film for every vaguely space-related release to be judged against. And rightly so. Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey remains breathtaking some five decades on as an examination of art, technology and human existence. Travel far into the future, where scientist-astronaut David Bowman (Keir Dullea) is in the Discovery spaceship with three other astronauts bound for Jupiter to examine a mysterious black monolith. The Discovery is controlled by the sentient, mono-tonal computer HAL 9000 (Douglas Rain), whose full abilities and emotional range are an unknown mystery.
According to co-writer Arthur C. Clarke, Kubrick was "determined to create a work of art which would arouse the emotions of wonder, awe and even, if appropriate, terror." Mission accomplished. The stunning futuristic set design features now-classic pieces of mid-century furniture by the likes of George Nelson and Arne Jacobsen, paired beautifully with the swelling orchestral compositions of Strauss. Voted #1 in the 2022 Sight & Sound Director’s Poll, it’s simply one of the great cinematic masterpieces.
