“You were born to be loved but you don’t realise it”
The late Alain Delon basks alongside Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin in Jacques Deray’s swelteringly sensual, stunningly scenic and irresistibly sexy psychological drama La Piscine (The Swimming Pool). Lovers Jean-Paul (Delon) and Marianne (Schneider) lounge about on their sun kissed villa holiday in the South of France before they are joined by her old flame Harry (Maurice Ronet) who slyly hopes to get back with her. Meanwhile, Jean-Paul starts taking a special interest in Harry’s teenage daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin). Then one night, tensions boil over and life takes an unexpected sharp turn for all four.
A masterclass in the ‘beautiful people doing terrible things to each other in paradise’ genre, La Piscine is a delicious treat to the eyes (looking better than ever in a new 4K restoration) that slowly wades into darker depths – waters once soothing become deadly. This film also marked the onscreen reunion of separated couple mythique Delon and Schneider whose natural chemistry and complicated emotional dynamics spill onto the screen with raw passion and intensity.
