Overview

The legendary Toshiro Mifune leads as Taketoki Washizu in Throne of Blood (originally titled The Spider Web Castle), Akira Kurosawa’s nightmarish and desolate adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. After great success in battle, generals Washizu and Miki (Takashi Shimura) encounter a mischievous spirit in the forest who predicts a great promotion and success for their heirs. Upon returning to Spider's Web Castle, they’re promoted as foretold by their Lord Tsuzuki. Concerned by these portentous fortunes, Washizu’s wife Lady Asaji (Isuzu Yamada) warns him that this soothsaying will mark them as threats to the lord’s throne, so the only thing to do is strike first in the dead of night.

Why You Should See This Film

A malevolent monochrome masterpiece, this really is one of the scariest looking films out there; set amongst the hills of a volcanic wasteland, constantly shrouded in an oppressive fog of war, skewered by the needle sharp shadows of pine trees and haunted by evil spirits through chilling tricks of photography and staging. Combining western tragedy with Noh theatrics and two feverish performances by Toshiro Mifune and Isuzu Yamada, Throne of Blood is hands down the greatest cinematic take on Macbeth and honestly improves upon its material in its novel diversions.
