David Fincher and screenwriter James Vanderbilt take on the infamous unsolved case of the Zodiac Killer, who killed seven people in San Francisco’s Bay Area in 1968 and then vanished without a trace. As much a story about obsession as it is about murder, the film charts the decades-long investigation into the killings, from the perspectives of police, journalists and obsessive amateurs. Lead by anxious newspaper-cartoonist-turned-homicide-investigator Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal, in one of his career-best performances) and cynical seasoned journo Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.) – Zodiac is a riveting, paranoia-soaked tale of the perils inherent in the search for the truth.
17 years on, David Fincher’s Zodiac remains not only one of the director’s best films but also one of the finest cinematic procedurals ever made – up there with Memories of Murder. Deeply unsettling and marked by Fincher’s trademark cool intelligence and obsessive attention to detail (meticulously captured by the cinematography of the late, great Harris Savides), Zodiac is the rare film that manages to match the intricacy of its plot with that of its form. We’re proud to present the director’s cut of Zodiac.
