Jon Favreau writes, directs and stars in Chef, a heartwarming film about friendship, food trucks and following your dreams. As Carl Casper, Favreau plays a well-respected Los Angeles–based chef, once known for shaking shit up. After a showdown with a well-respected food blogger (Oliver Platt) goes viral, Carl hangs up his apron to follow his foodie dreams, prodded along by his loyal kitchen staff and family. When his ex-wife Inex (Sofia Vergara) hooks him up (via her ex-husband, scene-stealer Robert Downey Jr) with a beat-up old van, Carl gets to work transforming it into the home of 'El Jefe' and sets off across the country with trusty sidekick John Leguizamo and his ten-year-old son-slash-line-cook, serving up the most delicious Cubanos you’ve ever seen (seriously).
Why You Should See This Film
Simplicity aside, much of the pleasure of Chef is to be found in the food, which is chopped and buttered and lovingly fried. Prior to filming, Favreau worked with LA Korean BBQ food-truck king Roy Choi, and it comes across in the much-featured finessed home-cooking style. Pro tip: Don't see it hungry! Grab a bite from the bar before you go in. TRUST US.
