Wild Winter Nights: Climax
From French provocateur Gaspar Noé (Enter the Void, Irréversible) comes a thrilling new exercise in human extremity, moral abandon and contemporary dance. It’s the mid-‘90s and a troupe of dancers are partying in a snow-bound boarding school to celebrate the end of rehearsals. They gyrate, pirouette, make out, talk dirty, and take generous swigs from a bowl of sangria. When they realise their booze has been spiked, the group begins to descend into a hallucinatory haze of psychoses and neuroses, entering the depths of Hell set to an electronic beat.
Why You Should See This Film
Climax holds the unusual distinction of being the most widely-adored release of Gaspar Noé’s career, inspiring only six people to walk out of its Cannes screening (down from the director’s “usual 25%”). Much of that can be put down to the film’s truly breathtaking choreography, from its awe-inspiring opening moments to its satanic, LSD-soaked denouement. And that’s not to mention the soundtrack. You’ll be singing Cerrone all the way home…
