Memories of the grand sweeping gestures and small intimate moments that make up a life combine in two-boxes-of-tissues romantic drama We Live in Time, with Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield bringing their talent and charm to this poignant story of love and loss. Using personal milestones as signposts the story moves out of chronological order, charting the relationship of ambitious chef Almut (Pugh) and I'm-also-here middle manager Tobias (Garfield), an odd-couple of soulmates doing their best to navigate parenthood. Skipping back and forth through all the highs and lows of romance from their honeymoon phase to a devastating cancer diagnosis, we see fully rounded human beings with dreams and flaws who are struggling to deal with looming mortality and the question of legacy.
“Pugh and Garfield are a dynamite duo in this likably earnest, satisfyingly complicated love story.”
“With Pugh and Garfield delivering authentic, genuine movie-star performances, We Live in Time is an old-fashioned weeper, done with heart and originality.”
“Seldom has such an unflinchingly honest take on mortality felt so transcendently life-affirming.”
The tragic romance form is classic but the nuances of We Live in Time place it firmly in the contemporary world, with difficult conversations about career ambitions and having children in an uncertain world of economic precarity. By the time of their vehicular meet-cute Almut and Tobias are already in their 30s with a few failed relationships under their belts, giving an insight into the joys and frustrations of an adult relationship. Refreshingly earnest and anchored by devastatingly heartfelt performances from Pugh and Garfield, We Live in Time is a cathartic journey to what occurs after the happily-ever-after.
