Valentine's Day with Gelato Messina: Call Me By Your Name
Visionary director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Suspiria) returns to the lush Italian countryside with Call Me By Your Name, based on André Aciman's acclaimed novel. Set in 1987, the film follows precocious 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) who spends luxurious (and fairly erudite) holidays with his parents in a Northern Italian village. Each summer his academic father (Michael Stuhlbarg) invites a graduate student to live with the family for six weeks and this year the visitor is dashingly confident Oliver (Armie Hammer). As the season progresses, the relationship between Elio and Oliver builds from tentative glances and mild scorn to lust-filled nighttime escapades in this sumptuous tale of first romance.
Why You Should See This Film
This film aches with beauty. From the jaw-dropping Italian villa setting to the extended summer lunch sequences, from the dance floor of the local disco to the Adonis-like bone structure of its two leads, Call Me By Your Name is almost too much. Almost. Deservedly nominated for three Academy Awards – with James Ivory winning for this perfect screenplay – it's little wonder that this European idyll always sells out when it returns to our Golden Screen.
