In one of his most ingenious creations in years, M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) places an unconventional serial killer thriller in the midst of a pop concert. Josh Hartnett stars as Cooper, a loving father who takes his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to see her favourite musician Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan) live. Throughout the cheers and tunes, Cooper notices an unusually strong police presence and learns that the entire concert is actually one big trap for a serial killer known as The Butcher who is supposedly in attendance. With all exits heavily guarded, Cooper must find a way to get himself and his daughter out of the concert while protecting his own dark secret.
Shyamalan pitched Trap to studios as The Silence of the Lambs set at one of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows – now imagine that through the evocative lens of Challengers cinematographer and frequent Apichatpong Weerasethakul collaborator Sayombhu Mukdeeprom. Influenced by Prince’s Purple Rain and Bollywood cinema, M.Night collaborated with his singer-songwriter daughter Saleka who crafted an entire soundtrack for the in-film concert featuring Kid Cudi, Russ and Amaare that ebbs and flows with the film’s narrative. Some say Shyamalan has been making a comeback for a while but we feel that with giddily fun and thrillingly inventive films such as this, the man is well and truly back and here to stay.
