Overview

One of the greatest martial arts films of recent memory, The Raid sees a daring special forces team fighting their way through a rundown Jakarta apartment fortress controlled by ruthless crime lord Tama (Ray Sahetapy). Finding themselves in over their heads when their floor-by-floor assault is ambushed by Tama’s henchmen, rookie officer Rama (Iko Uwais) and a few survivors must fight for their lives, forming uneasy alliances with the building’s tenants and evading the thirsty machetes lurking around every corner. Among Tama's enforcers, the fearsome Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian) and Andi (Donny Alamsyah) close in on the remaining intruders.

“The Raid is completely deranged-and completely superb”

The Guardian

“A slam-bang, knock-your-socks-off action bonanza with some of the most peerlessly shot, performed and choreographed fight sequences you’re likely to see on screen”

The LA Times

Why You Should See This Film

More than its slick choreography – The Raid is a lean, mean, non-stop survival thriller of nail-biting suspense, grizzly horror and double-crossing criminal intrigue. Frenetically showcasing the deadly martial art of pencak silat while maintaining clarity of movement, Gareth Evans and his team approach action with a refreshing dynamism anchored by compelling stakes – not only is the action off the chains, but you care about the characters involved. Spawning a flurry of imitators as well as a fantastic sequel,The Raid marks the humble beginnings of a whole cast of talents, using their limited resources to maximum effect.
