Overview

After a long spell of bad luck, peasants Tahei (Minor Chiaki) and Matashich (Kamatari Fujiwara) find themselves on the run from the feudal Yamana Clan before crossing paths with a mysterious warrior (Toshiro Mifune) and a hot-tempered woman (Misa Uehara). Taking interest in the serfs’ plan to escape Yamana territory, the strangers hire them as guides. Secretly, the man is the famous General Makabe Rokurōta of the recently defeated Akizuki clan, his companion is none other than Princess Yuki and with them is all their kingdom’s gold.

Why You Should See This Film

Famous in the west for being the chief influence on Star Wars, The Hidden Fortress was Kurowasa’s most successful film up to that point as well as the first time he shot in Tohoscope. A pulp adventure of extraordinary landscapes, thrilling combat and swashbuckling hijinks, it’s easily the most fun you can have with a Kurosawa picture.
