Widely considered one of the best Czech films ever made, Juraj Herz's The Cremator is a devilishly dark comedy about the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe, its insidious hypocrisy and its horrific delusion. Karel Kopfrkingl (Rudolf Hrušínský), an odd but well-meaning family man who works at a Prague crematorium, values his work spiritually for ‘liberating the souls of the dead’ in accordance with his understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. As Nazi ideologies begin poisoning his mind, Karel embarks on a murderous spree of cremations in the hopes of becoming the next Dalai Lama.
One of the key films of the Czech New Wave, Juraj Herz's wild adaptation of the novel by Ladislav Fuks is a hyper-stylised, deliriously atmospheric and visually astounding response to the horrors of the Holocaust carried by a chilling performance from Rudolf Hrušínský. After its premiere, The Cremator was banned by the Czechoslovak communist regime and Vlasta Chramostová, who plays Kopfrkingl's wife was blacklisted along with her husband Stanislav Milota, the cinematographer behind this film’s incredible visual style – we are honoured to finally let it loose upon the Golden Screen.
