Overview

How Canadian college student Merrill Beth Nisker became Peaches—whose rough and ready album The Teaches of Peaches pushed boundaries of women's self expression and sexuality in music— is a fascinating story, and the way she's endured and thrived in the 20-some years since its release is just as wild a ride. Following the electroclash pioneer on her (COVID-postponed) jubilee tour, this documentary captures the charisma and audacious sense of showmanship that has electrified audiences the world over. Alongside interviews with musicians like Feist and Sirley Manson who contextualise the impact her breakthrough single Fuck the Pain Away had in the superficial, body-policing times of the early 00s, Peaches herself reflects on the strange turns her journey from children's music teacher to cult queer icon has taken

20 years later the ferocity, talent, sex appeal, and provocativeness have not dulled a single bit

Film Inquiry

“It’s edgy, defiant, and unabashed in its directness.”

POV Magazine

“Anyone who gets to spend two hours with Peaches (and the documentary) should consider themselves lucky to be taught such teaches.

Why You Should See This Film

Teaches of Peaches features a lot of wry humour about the curious position of an aging provocateur (most of all from Peaches herself), but this is far from a eulogy of "back in the day". Perhaps because her rise to fame happened in her mid-30s amidst a youth-obsessed culture, the artist has a keen sense of her place in history that lends itself to a measured view, proud of what she's accomplished but also excited to collaborate with the next generation. Avoiding saccharine hero-worship and overbearing stylistic choices, this is a documentary that wisely allows allows its dynamic subject, her music and her incredible stage presence to speak for themselves.
