Overview

To say that Marietta Fortune (Diane Ladd) does not like her daughter Lula’s boyfriend would be an understatement. Marietta hired a man to attack Sailor (Nicolas Cage), after which Sailor did jail time for killing the assailant. Upon his release, Sailor is reunited with Lula (Laura Dern), and the young lovebirds soon hit the road to get as far away as possible from Lula’s overbearing mother. But Marietta’s not through hiring professionals to track them down. David Lynch’s first film after Blue Velvet is as surreal as ever, yet more dynamic, poppy, and laugh out loud funny than perhaps anything else, awash with bleached hair, leopard print, snakeskin, cool cars and roadhouse bars, not to mention Isabella Rossellini, Harry Dean Stanton, Willem Dafoe, and one of the greatest cameos Crispin Glover ever turned in – which is really saying something!

Why You Should See This Film

This quintessentially American road movie has allusions to Elvis Presley (the man, his music, and his films), as well as The Wizard Of Oz (see if you can spot the references). The film is based on Barry Gifford’s 1990 novel Wild At Heart: The Story of Sailor and Lula, which was the first of many books by Gifford focusing on the titular couple; Gifford later worked with Lynch directly when he helped write the mesmerising Lost Highway. Between so much incredibly imagery and so many great performances, it's screen legend Diane Ladd’s crazed turn that really stands out, earning her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
