Spirit of Mexico: Desperado
The second in Robert Rodriguez’s Mexico trilogy, Desperado picks up where El Mariachi left off, with the addition of a Hollywood-sized budget, a Quentin Tarantino cameo, and the blazing star power of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. Seeking revenge for the murder of the woman he loved, El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) sets out to track down the man responsible — the notorious drug lord Bucho. Leaving a trail of destruction (and hordes of bullets) in his wake, El Mariachi stops at nothing in his quest. Enlisting the help of his best friend (Steve Buscemi, who else?), and a beautiful bookstore owner Carolina (Salma Hayek) along the way, the stage is set for one epic showdown.
Why You Should See This Film
A true ‘90s cult classic, Desperado is definitely not winning any prizes for subtlety. There’s hardly a minute without some kind of explosion, shoot-out, or chase sequence on screen. But that’s exactly what makes it so fun. Proudly, completely OTT, Desperado dials every element up to 11. Plus, Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek are reliably terrific, and make for one of the most attractive on-screen couples in celluloid history.
