Overview

A hugely influential horror masterpiece, a meta-cinematic study of voyeurism, obsession and murder and the film that killed its director Michael Powell’s career, Peeping Tom finally comes to the Golden Screen in a beautiful new 4K restoration. By day Mark (Carl Boehm) pulls focus for a local film studio and takes lewd photographs but by night his camera dons a deadly lens as he murders women with a spiked tripod, always attempting to capture the perfect moment of mortal terror. As Mark warms up to his neighbour Helen (Anna Massey), it seems almost a matter of time before his deadly gaze turns to her too.

Why You Should See This Film

While Peeping Tom is considered one of the first slashers alongside Hitchcock’s Psycho (which came out the very same year), Powell’s film was derided by critics at the time for its violence and sexual content, ultimately ostracising him from the filmmaking community despite his grand history of classics made with Emeric Pressburger. In the years and decades that followed, the film was slowly rediscovered and eventually deemed a misunderstood masterwork – and for good reason! Featuring richly coloured production design (looking better than even in 4K), shockingly inventive camerawork, a chilling performance by Carl Boehm and an ingenuous cinematic study, Peeping Tom is an utterly essential work.
