Overview

Based on an astounding true story, Robert Redford stars as 70-year-old career criminal Forrest Tucker — just escaped from San Quentin prison and already on a new bank robbery spree across the country. While being pursued by rookie detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck) and romancing his love interest Jewel (Sissy Spacek), Tucker must reckon with his age, his future and his obsessive life in crime. A classic cat-and-mouse tale filled with dry humour, tender subtlety and fizzy romantic sparks, The Old Man & the Gun is a beautifully executed old-school treat.

★★★★½ "An unassuming, exuberant gift. Redford robs banks — and steals your heart."
— Rolling Stone
★★★★ "Redford radiates smoothness, wisdom and charm to the very end."
— The Guardian

Why You Should See This Film

Based on journalist David Grann’s 2003 article of the same name in The New Yorker, this film is a bittersweet character study from an incomparable Hollywood star. Enlivening the crime genre with a much-needed dose of effortless charm, The Old Man & the Gun sees Redford return to the kind of cinematic fare with which he first made his name. Whether or not this turns out to be his final film performance, it’s certainly an appropriately joyous note on which to end.
