Mountains is a gripping, heartfelt drama that earned director Monica Sorelle the Someone to Watch Award at the Independent Spirit Awards, while star Atibon Nazaire was nominated for Best Breakthrough Performance. Set in gentrifying Miami, the film centers on Xavier, a hardworking Haitian man who dreams of providing a better life for his family. As a construction worker, he’s dedicated to buying his seamstress wife a new home, but with rising housing prices and his son’s desire to pursue stand-up comedy instead of following in his father’s footsteps, Xavier’s loyalty to his family and community is tested. With stunning performances and a timely exploration of generational conflict, Mountains poignantly captures the struggles of balancing personal ambition with familial duty, making it a must-see film for today’s world.
