Overview

Winner of the coveted Special Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival, Minding the Gap sees director Bing Liu record his two best friends — Zack and Keire — as they approach the trials of adulthood over a 12-year period in working class Illinois. Bonded by their shared love of skateboarding, the young men grapple with familial expectations, economic difficulties and childhood trauma while struggling to grow from boys to men. Lyrically shot by director-cinematographer Liu, Minding the Gap manages an uncommon feat — addressing the emotionally fraught subject matter of racial identity, awkward sexuality, fatherhood, childhood trauma and what it means to “be a man” with vivid intimacy and a sensitive eye.

"Peerless ... sensational ... beautifully charts how we look at modern masculinity"
— Rolling Stone
"A tour de force ... This is modern day John Cassavetes with tattoos and punk music."
— The Film Stage
"A rich, devastating essay on race, class and manhood in 21st-century America."
— The New York Times

Why You Should See This Film

Exclusive to Golden Age in Sydney, Minding the Gap is one of the best-received documentary releases of last year, receiving multiple accolades and already short-listed for Best Documentary Feature at the 2019 Academy Awards. Liu effortlessly pairs the keen-eyed insight of non-fiction filmmaking with a sense of time-worn affection, as we watch the three young men use skateboarding and uncompromising friendship as a way to heal old wounds.
