“Don’t let the now destroy the forever”
From Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis is a Roman epic set in an imagined modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor's daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.
“Megalopolis isn't just a transcendental delight for the senses, it's a manifestation of Coppola's dreams for humanity and his dedication to cinema”
“A great American director returns with an ambitious vision of a city – and a world – in need of renewal … By turns aggressively heady, stubbornly illogical, and beguilingly optimistic”
“You should see Megalopolis... Like wandering through the dreams of one of the most important filmmakers of all time”
Decades in the making (initially conceived in 1977, prepared throughout the ‘80s, revived in 2001 then abandoned after the September 11th attacks, reapproached in 2019 then delayed due to the pandemic), Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed passion project is a dazzling and extraordinarily inventive cinematic clarion call to strive toward a grander future for humanity. This science fictive reimagining of the fall of Rome is at once awe-inspiring, vulgar, hilarious, thrilling and thoroughly entertaining; tonally swinging between over the top comedy and utopian majesty like a pendulum. Its impossible to truly prepare yourself for this instant cult-classic – watching Megalopolis feels like history in the making.
