Matangi / Maya / M.I.A.

(Rated MA15+)

"You wanna hear my story?"

Session Times

Drawn from a cache of personal video recordings made over the past 22 years, director Steve Loveridge’s Sundance award-winning Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. is a startling portrait of the critically acclaimed artist, following her journey from refugee immigrant to boundary-pushing pop star. Beginning as Matangi, a daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka’s Tamil resistance, her family fled from civil war to live in the UK when she was a young child. There she became Maya, a precocious and deeply creative London teenager, before finally emerging on the global stage as M.I.A., the ultra-confident and über political voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth, blending activism, art school punk and hip-hop beats.

"For once, in this film, she truly gets to control her own narrative."
— The Guardian
"This is not a normal pop documentary, because M.I.A. is not a normal pop star."
— The Atlantic
"Intimate, illuminating ... Never-before-seen footage gives us an up-close and personal look."
— Empire

Why You Should See This Film

Never one to compromise on her vision, Maya has kept a camera rolling throughout most of her life. First meeting Loveridge in the mid-'90s when the pair were students at Central St. Martin's College, Maya gave the filmmaker unprecedented access to her archives, entrusting him to conjure the complete picture of her tumultuous life. As a result, this film is the first to offer a truly intimate portrait of this singular artist — from her battles with the mainstream media to her outspoken politics to her game-changing musical abilities. This is a must-see for die-hard devotees and curious fans alike.
