Overview

Following up his Palme D'Or winning war drama The Cranes are Flying, and before his immense political epic I Am Cuba, Soviet director Mikhail Kalatozov conjured some of his most incredible images (with cinematographer Sergey Urusevsky) in this gripping journey of exploration, ambition and survival. The fiery Tatiana Samoilova (The Cranes are Flying) stars as one member of a four-person geology expedition for diamonds that winds up stranded in the punishing Siberian wilderness. As desire and ambition threaten to tear the group apart, so too do the elements: rushing river crossings, ferocious forest fires, icy gales and the sheer enormity of the desolate landscape.

Why You Should See This Film

Often overshadowed by the prestigious acclaim heaped upon Cranes and Cuba, the Palme D'Or nominated Letter Never Sent remains one of the most extraordinarily shot and staged films ever made – the bottled lightning of the Kalatozov / Urusevsky moment still unmatched. Turning away from wartime and revolution, this film frames mankind’s struggle against the uncaring might of nature in riveting wide-angled close-up, surging with jaw-dropping sequences meticulously choreographed on location with radical photographic techniques. You've got to see it to believe it.
