What began as an eight-week program for participants becomes something much more in this galvanising Australian documentary that reckons with the legacy of abuse. Coach, academic and survivor Donna Lyon founded Left Write Hook, the innovative combination of boxing and cathartic writing, in 2019 with a mission of offering a space for people who are dealing with trauma to “Reclaim. Rewrite. Release.” When the Naarm COVID-19 lockdowns came into effect the participants continued to meet virtually, working on the memory-healing aspect of the project while the muscle memory component was put on hold. Director Shannon Owen follows the participants' fear and excitement as they work towards publishing their writing, leaving the enclosed safety of the group to bring their narratives to the public.
Audience note: this film contains discussion of childhood sexual abuse and self harm
Audience Award
“Heartbreakingly sad and yet ultimately creatively triumphant.”
“A rewarding watch, Left Write Hook is never lost in the appalling truths it reveals...floats like a butterfly and also stings like a bee.”
Owen has navigated difficult terrain in bringing the stories of these survivors to the screen, engaging with ongoing participant consultation and showing them as diverse and complex individuals not solely defined by their experiences. The documentary form mirrors the fragmented nature of traumatic memories and the dissociation that results, incorporating video diaries and moments of fantasy to bridge the gaps in what can be recalled or expressed. Left Write Hook is an at times confronting watch that tackles an issue affecting one in four Australians, a cathartic journey about the power of physically and mentally reconnecting with oneself.
