Adapted from the biography written by her son, Lee is a fascinating portrait of a woman whose daring and tenacity helped bring the reality of war to the world stage. American surrealist artist and former fashion model Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) is living in London at the outbreak of World War II and becomes the official wartime photographer for Vogue magazine, chronicling the lives of everyday people during the Blitz. With women forbidden to enter active combat zones, she travels alongside Life magazine reporter David E. Scherman (Andy Samberg) into the brutal heart of the European conflict front, documenting the horrors of liberated Nazi concentration camps. As she struggles to reintegrate into civilian life, the deep emotional scars of what Lee has witnessed puts her at odds with the people she knew and loved.
“A vivid and unforgettable tribute to one of the bold women who devoted her life to the penetration of male dominance to change the way we see the world. Don’t even think about missing it.”
“Lee is beautiful, daring, and elusive, as all great art should be.”
“Winslet deploys impressive range...this rageful portrayal is among her very best transformations.”
As one of a handful of women invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers, director Ellen Kuras has a personal understanding of the challenges in a male-dominated profession. She and star/co-producer Kate Winslet met while shooting Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and worked for nearly a decade to bring the extraordinary story of Lee Miller to the screen, with the assistance of Miller's son who gave Kuras access to his mother's personal diaries and unpublished work. Lee's legacy has been overlooked for decades, but thanks to this labour of love and a truly embodied performance by Winslet Lee gives a glimpse into the complex life of a unique artist.
