Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person is a French-Canadian-soft-goth-rom-com with heart. All sensitive 68-year-old teenage vampire Sasha (Sara Monpetit) wants to do is practice her music, and all her family wants her to do is bring a nice boy home for dinner— if only she could overcome her inability to bite people. Her parents decide the only way she'll learn to survive is to cut off access to their blood bank, leaving Sasha to fend for herself in the gloomy Montreal night. When she meets depressed loner mortal Paul (Félix-Antoine Bénard) it seems like the perfect match, but their eat-cute soon becomes a complicated quest to fulfil his final wish before day breaks.
Winner - Director's Award
“A charmingly comic story that puts a new twist on the classic teenage angst/vampire combo.”
“A rom-com for teenagers (and teenagers at heart) who swoon when cute boys talk about death.”
With a delicate blend of humour and pathos it's easy to see how this charming little film has won over festival audiences at Venice, TIFF and Sitges. Sara Monpetit has incredible charisma as sensitive vampire Sasha, and her chemistry with Félix-Antoine Bénard as they try to fulfil his dreams before being eaten makes this feel a little like an undead Amélie by way of The Addams Family (with just a nibble of Nosferatu). The title is a mouthful, but this coming-of-age Quebecois take on the genre has a genuine sweetness that makes it go down smoothly.
Please note this film will screen in French with English subtitles.
