Hot Summer Nights: Rear Window
Wheelchair-bound and listless in his New York apartment, adventurous photographer Jeff (James Stewart) spends his recuperation spying on the neighbours he can see out the window. Visited only by his spirited, disapproving nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter) and on-again-off-again love interest Lisa (Grace Kelly), Jeff’s fascination with the day-to-day rituals he’s observing becomes something of an obsession when he suspects one of his neighbours of murder. Stella and Lisa are soon (reluctantly) pulled into his web of suspense and intrigue in this properly nail-biting Hitchcock masterpiece.
Why You Should See This Film
The American Film Institute rates Rear Window as its #3 Mystery Film of all time. It’s a hand-down must-see classic and our programmer’s favourite Hitchcock film. Even François Truffaut wrote an essay about it for Cahiers Du Cinema! We’re screening a newly-restored 2K DCP version, so it’s safe to say you’ve never seen it looking quite so sharp.
