A group of death-row inmates have been sent into the outer reaches of the solar system as a dangerous experiment, led by a sinister doctor with mysterious motives (Juliette Binoche). As time begins to bend the further away from Earth they travel, the only passengers who remain alive are the introverted Monte (Robert Pattinson) and a baby who is growing up with no concept of life beyond their cursed vessel. As details of how they came to be in such isolation begin to unravel via thrilling flashbacks, we soon realise that they're hurtling towards the certain oblivion of a black hole.
Why You Should See This Film
A staggering and primal exploration of love and intimacy on the final frontier, suffused with anguished memories of a lost Earth, High Life is a haunting achievement from visionary auteur Claire Denis (Let the Sunshine In, White Material). This is a truly dark ride into space, complete with cruel mind games, copious bodily fluids and echoes of the natural world left behind. Reminiscent of innovative sci-fi cult classics 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris — just with a little more blood, sweat and tears.
