Overview

From award-winning filmmakers Waad al-Khateab and Edward Watts, witness an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, For Sama tells the story of al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama—all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as she wrestles with an impossible choice: whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.

"One of the most important films you will ever see in your life"
— Film Threat
"One of the most profoundly intimate depictions of the Syrian conflict ever put to screen"
— The Independent UK
"Sifting six years’ worth of rubble, al-Kateab turns up beauty and one earthly miracle to set alongside the horrors"
— The Guardian

Why You Should See This Film

Deservedly nominated for Best Documentary Feature at this year's 92nd Academy Awards, For Sama powerfully combines the personal and the political to heart-stopping ends. Wishing to turn the incredible worldwide reaction to the film into positive action for people living in affected areas of Syria, directors al-Khateab and Edward Watts have since established the Action For Sama campaign in an act of cinematic activism.
