Overview
Comic book fanatic Clarence (Christian Slater) is treating himself on his birthday to a martial arts triple-feature when he meets a beautiful call girl named Alabama (Patricia Arquette). After falling in love over a game of ’20 Questions’ at a diner, the pair promptly head to Alabama’s pimp Drexl (Gary Oldman) to inform him that she’s decided on a change of career. He’s a little miffed – naturally – and the first of many shots are fired. The two lovebirds escape with a bag of Drexl’s cocaine, planning to sell the drugs in L.A. and ride off into the sunset. Problem is, the drugs actually belonged to the Sicilian mafia and a mob of ruthless gangsters are soon hot on their tail to reclaim what’s theirs – by whatever means necessary.
Why You Should See This Film
Quentin Tarantino’s trademark gutter poetry is stamped all over this scorching screenplay, which was his very first written for a major motion picture. Directed by ‘80s maverick Tony Scott (Top Gun, The Hunger) with shoot-em-up flair, True Romance is a first-rate, utterly sublime romantic thriller and features irresistible supporting performances from Dennis Hopper, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson, Val Kilmer and James Gondolfini. Need we say more?
Presented with Holiday by Emma Mulholland
This screening features an introduction by Emma Mulholland of irreverent ready-to-wear label Holiday. Designing apparel with a cult following to rival True Romance itself, we're thrilled that Mulholland has selected one of her own favourite – and aesthetically inspirational – films to present on our Golden Screen.
One lucky ticket-holder will win a glorious Holiday gift voucher – to be announced on the night.
