Overview

Return to the halls of high school for this cult tale of schoolyard politics, ruthless ambition and painstakingly well-frosted cupcakes from director Alexander Payne (Sideways, Citizen Ruth). Tracy Flick is a star student in the suburbs of Nebraska with a Type A personality and an assortment of fetching sweaters. Terminally delightful but seething with a barely contained appetite for success, her less-than-ethical approach to getting her own way raises the ire of well-liked teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick). When Tracy decides to run for student body president, Jim hatches a plan to convince dim-witted jock Paul (Chris Klein) to compete for the title. But as Tracy’s campaign gets underway and she realises that nefarious forces are working against her, it ignites a hilariously acidic feud that threatens to derail the proceedings — and perhaps Jim’s entire life.

Why You Should See This Film

The film that launched Witherspoon into the exalted realm of critical darlings, Election lets the Oscar-winning actress lean into her natural flair for highly-strung cunning that she’d later bring to Big Little Lies. From its unrelentingly wicked screenplay to its pitch perfect late-‘90s aesthetic, this film is both a cinematic time capsule and a still-fresh satire of ambition, high school politics and cupcake frosting.

Presented by Elements Rising – #7. CAPRICORN

Elements Rising is a monthly series curated by Matt Lennon (Libra Sun / Scorpio Rising) and Kate Jinx (Leo Sun / Gemini Rising) that explores the cinematic side of each Zodiac sign.
