Overview

From Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna) comes a brand new documentary following the utterly spectacular rise and stunning fall from grace of a one-of-a-kind sporting legend. Seamlessly constructed from over 500 hours of unseen footage and rare audio interviews, Diego Maradona delves into the fractured personal life and soaring successes of arguably the greatest football player of all time. From his iconic World Cup victory representing Argentina to his singlehanded revival of the unfashionable Napoli club in the late ‘80s, we’re given a field-side seat to some truly gobsmacking sporting feats. Naturally, these are balanced out by tales of illegitimate children, cocaine addiction and troubling mafia ties in this fascinating portrait of class, corruption and unparalleled skill.

"A compelling, tragic life of gangsters, glory, goal-scoring and addiction — told with flair ... by a master storyteller"
— Empire
"As mesmeric as its subject’s skills and as raw as his life off the pitch, Asif Kapadia’s latest is another doc of real class and insight"
— Time Out
"I found myself gripped by a universally accessible tale of a divided soul"
— The Observer

Why You Should See This Film

Working with long-time editor Chris King, Kapadia weaves the intricate story of how a child from the slums bordering Buenos Aires would grow up to become an international icon of “the beautiful game”. Handling its subject’s off-field scandals with tact and insight, Diego Maradona is yet another triumph for one of the most accomplished documentary filmmakers working today.
