Overview

Gloriously romantic and set against the gorgeous desert landscapes of Reno, Nevada, Desert Hearts is the groundbreaking first film by director Donna Deitch. Based on the 1964 Jane Rule novel Desert of the Heart, it follows well-heeled Columbia University English literature professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) as she arrives in town to file for divorce to escape her amicable, yet loveless marriage. There, she catches the eye of the striking, free-spirited Cay (Patricia Charbonneau), sparking a slow burn of a seduction that challenges everything Vivian ever knew of love.

Why See This Film

Desert Hearts is an underseen treasure of ‘80s American independent cinema, as well as a pioneering queer classic. With red-hot chemistry between Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau as the two leads, stunning cinematography by regular Paul Thomas Anderson collaborator Robert Elswit, and a show-stopper of a jukebox soundtrack featuring Elvis, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald and more – there is a bounty of riches to unearth in this swooning desert romance.
