Travel to the criminally beautiful Italian coastline with a sumptuous adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s iconic thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley. American layabout Tom Ripley (Alain Delon) journeys to Italy to visit his playboy friend Phillippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet) and Phillippe's new fiancée Marge Duval (Marie Laforêt). Unbeknownst to his friend, Tom has been hired by Phillippe’s parents to persuade their errant son to abandon Europe and return to his former life in San Francisco. Instead, Tom luxuriates in the glamorous life – indulging in rich food, romance and carousing till dawn. But when the funding for their extravagant tastes is abruptly cut off, Tom resorts to increasingly desperate – and violent – measures to maintain his newfound quality of life.
Why You Should See This Film
It's the film that made a household name out of its smouldering leading man Alain Delon. Long before he would star in Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï or Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Eclisse, Delon received adoring reviews for his performance as the duplicitous and debonair Tom Ripley. Still renowned for its stunning costume design and cinematography – the Italian seaside has rarely looked more irresistible – Plein Soleil manages to be both alluring and utterly disturbing, just as Highsmith intended.
