On Christmas Eve, a family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home in small-town Long Island, New York. Boisterous aunts, uncles, cousins and one indomitable grandmother drink themselves merry and talk to no end—even as they struggle to understand each other. As the group loses itself in rowdy celebration, youngsters Emily and Michelle sneak away to claim the suburban winter wonderland for teenage rebellion. An uncanny cinematic take on the holiday movie, with a stand-out ensemble including Michael Cera, Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Francesca Scorsese, Sawyer Spielberg, Maria Dizzia, Ben Shenkman, Gregg Turkington and newcomer Matilda Fleming.
“A very charming and rich movie, teeming with ambient detail”
“Strikingly original... a finely crafted and achingly romantic memory piece”
“A deceptively complex piece of filmmaking, something that feels artfully executed and organic at the same time”
We’ve been fans of director Tyler Taormina ever since his charming debut feature Ham on Rye a few years ago so we’re very pleased to see him doing his surreal kitschy thing with a cast of up-and-coming stars and bigger names like Michael Cera. Don’t let the old fashioned trailer fool you – its all part of the bit. Taormina transcends the holiday movie, indulging in festivities, theatrics and romance to such a sugar-heightened degree while fragmenting into little moments of honesty, serenity and surreality that explore and memorialise the strangeness of childhood, the frustrations of adolescence and the loneliness of adulthood, all with great care for his characters and the tight-knit suburban experience.
